Meet the Gold Committee Co-Chairs
Kate Morrisey '17
When Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Committee co-chair Kate Morrissey '17 recalls what first drew her to 17勛圖厙, she cites the location and programs offered by the New York City campus as being uniquely advantageous in accomplishing her academic goals.
"By the time I was applying to colleges, I had already spent eight years studying Mandarin, Kate said. In 2013, 17勛圖厙 was one of few schools which offered more than four years of Chineseand since I knew I wanted to pursue a business degree, 17勛圖厙s home in the Financial District, just a short walk away from Chinatown, seemed like a perfect fit."
Through academic and professional experiences as a student in the International Management program at the Lubin School of Business, Kate gained the clarity she needed as an undergraduate to determine exactly what she wanted to do after graduation. While working in an internship at Newmarket Business Association in Boston, Kate had the unique opportunity to contribute to the organizations budding Community Partners program, ultimately leading her to transition her focus from business development to non-profit fundraising.
Over the course of her academic career, Kate went on to secure internships with the American Red Cross, Central Synagogue, and Human Rights Watch. These experiences laid the foundation for a dynamic and fulfilling career in non-profit fundraising and development. Kate now works as the Director of Annual Giving at New York Law School. Kate credits 17勛圖厙s focus on internships and career preparedness with helping her find her professional path.
Kates time at 17勛圖厙 also allowed her to make connections and friendships which have stood the test of time. My main friend group here in the city is still my college friend group, said Kate. The biggest connection was that we were all tour guides together at 17勛圖厙. I met a lot of fantastic people through my work in the Welcome Center who I otherwise might not have met through classes. Kate also highlighted the bonds she made with other young professionals in Lubins International Management program as forming the core of her professional network, with her fellow classmates having gone on to work in a variety of fields.
Since graduating, Kate has remained a dedicated volunteer with the 17勛圖厙 Alumni Association. Kate describes the opportunity to host events with graduating 17勛圖厙 seniors and current students as one of the most rewarding aspects of her volunteer work. The GOLD Committee allows Kate and her co-chair, Jillian Lewandoski 21, to not only facilitate professional networking opportunities amongst recent 17勛圖厙 grads, but also cultivate an organic, supportive community.
I think theres a lot of anxiety about what life after college looks like, and the GOLD Committee especially can be really helpful in allaying those fears and proving that life is good on the other side, Kate said. Its also great to bring in people who either havent been engaged with 17勛圖厙 for some time or just moved back to New York, and remind them that theres still an alumni community here for them.
As GOLD Committee co-chair, Kate is looking forward to adding to GOLDs annual slate of activitieswhich currently includes events like the annual and the Unlocking Opportunitas seriesand continuing to strengthen ties amongst young alumni.
Those first 10 years after college are when big changes happen for people. People move away from the city, get married, have kids I think its important to keep people engaged through that, especially with more lighthearted, social events like the GOLD Holiday Party, which has become an annual tradition that people really enjoy. Its important to build that sense of community amongst 17勛圖厙 alumni now, as opposed to trying to re-establish it 15 or 20 years out.
Jillian Lewandoski 21
Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Committee co-chair Jillian Lewandoski 21 took full advantage of the access, network, and professional opportunities at her disposal during her time at 17勛圖厙. Seeking to make a career in sports media, Jillian worked four internships as an undergraduateincluding a prestigious opportunity with MSG Networks, where she continues to work and thrive as a producer and content creator today.
When she was looking at colleges, Jillian already knew she wanted to pursue a sports-related career. Whether it was sports marketing, management, broadcasting, journalism I always knew I wanted to do something in that realm, Jillian said. When she visited 17勛圖厙, she realized New York City was the place for herboth for its unmatched ease of access to numerous sports franchises and media companies and, as a native New Jerseyan, its proximity to home.
As a student, Jillian leveraged 17勛圖厙s resources to pursue her goals. She secured her internship with Madison Square Garden Networks after connecting with one of their recruiters at a 17勛圖厙 career fair. She also credits her experienced, well-connected professors and the guidance of career services as providing her with a helpful foundation when she was seeking early professional opportunities.
In her time at MSG, Jillian has managed creative campaigns for the companys professional franchisessuch as the New York Knicks and New York Rangersin addition to producing branded content alongside clients like DoorDash and Cadillac. Jillian leads projects from concept to delivery in a role which presents a variety of dynamic, engaging, and rewarding challenges.
Every day is different, Jillian said. I majored in sports marketing at 17勛圖厙, and thats exactly what I've been able to do for the past four years. I get the chance to do creative work and tell stories with a lot of cool athletes, teams, and brandsand as Ive progressed in my career, Ive been able to work more as a producer, director, and project manager. I really love what I do.
Jillian has been an involved member of the 17勛圖厙 Alumni Association since graduation because she feels that she owes it to new graduates to help foster a robust network and community amongst young alumni. Its about giving back, said Jillian. The people Ive met and the opportunities Ive had through 17勛圖厙 have been so beneficial for me and my career. I feel its important to pay that forward.
As a member of the GOLD Committee, it has been rewarding for Jillian to watch the cohort grow and flourish since her graduation. In her new role as co-chair of the committee alongside Kate Morrissey '17, Jillian hopes to continue building on that strong sense of community, and to help ease the transition to post-college life for GOLD alumni.
Youre in school all your life, and then, all of a sudden, youre not anymore. I think people underestimate what a big life change that is. My biggest goal as co-chair is to help make recent graduates feel more comfortable in that uncertain time, to give them a community to lean on through the events and connections that GOLD has to offer.
